Global Food & Farming Futures

Project undertaken by Foresight in Gov't Office for Science, asking "How can a future global population of 9 billion people all be fed healthily and sustainably?". Project looks out to Food & Farming in 2050, and uses many strategic tools including driver analysis and systems mapping to good effect. Interim reports available, with final report due for launch in November 2010.
International Dimensions of Climate Change

Project undertaken by Foresight, in Government Office for Science and co-funded by Defra, designed to understand the impact that climate change abroad is having on the UK and how UK policy must adapt in response. Project uses futures techniques to analyse this issue and is due for publication in autumn 2010.

Document from the Centre for Policy Studies outlines three means by which the UK's highly centralised power-base, in which 70% of public spending is centralised compared to 50% or under in other EU states, can be devolved to local administrations to save up to £14 billion per year. These three means are: local support for the unemployed; local provision of community care; and local prevention of crime and anti-social behaviour.

A report by the Institute for Government based on extensive interviews with the Senior Civil Service, identifying three key challenges for the UK government: the strategic gap at the centre of Whitehall, an ability for departments to be able to hold themselves to account as a stronger strategic centre emerges, and the challenge for better collaboration between departments to achieve better outcomes. Strong on evidence and analysis.
