Understanding the Civil Service

A comprehensive induction to the civil service for everyone in the public sector

Understanding the Civil Service is a cross government consortium project led by the Ministry of Defence and the National School of Government. This comprehensive online programme is designed as an induction for new entrants and a refresher for exisiting civil servants.

It provides learners with an opportunity to undertake a generic introduction to the Civil Service, prior to embarking on department-specific induction activities.

Designed for new and existing civil servants it can be used as formal e-learning or as a resource of knowledge and advice that you can tap into.

If you don't know the difference between a Select Committee and a Standing Committee, don't know how to reply to a letter from an MP or don't really understand what's special about being a civil servant, the answers are all here.
